The organic mixed farm specialises in potato production and also runs a suckler to beef herd.
With experience of growing root crops and the growing demand for organic produce, Declan converted the land to organic production in 2016, having worked with organic farmers and studied a master’s course in organic production in Aberdeen, Scotland. Declan gained valuable experience before setting up Pynes Organics.
The Pynes grow a wide variety of early and main crop potatoes. Varieties are chosen for each customer’s needs with salad, table potatoes and the chip market catered for. The potatoes are available in supermarkets throughout Clare, such as Supervalu, Dunnes Stores , Centra and various other local shops in the County.
The potatoes are also available at Ennis Farmers market and Ennistymon farmers market and are stocked at these markets by Moy hill Farm. The Pynes also grow for other vegetable growers around the country who then sell them at farm shops and various other farmers markets.
Declan along with his father Senan run a herd of 30 Suckler cows. The cows are stabilisers crossed with a red Angus bull. The breed is most suitable to an organic holding with producing top quality prodigy on low inputs. The cows and calves graze multi species on rotation and livestock are finished on red clover silage.
The beef is renowned for its texture and marbling qualities. Replacement heifers are retained for breeding. The beef is sold at Luansa butcher shop in clarecastle and is also available on their online shop.
